OpenOffice OpenOffice

OpenOffice.org (often abbreviated as OpenOffice or OOo) refers to both an integrated office free and open community of developers led by large software vendors like Oracle or IBM, and the website hosting the entire project. The stated goal is to compete with Microsoft Office 2010 using the community to "create the leading international office suite, running on major platforms and provide access to functionality and data through open APIs and components and format of XML data.

OOo is divided into several modules that can interact and share common general concepts:

* Writer: word processing; Calc: spreadsheet; Impress: multimedia presentations; Draw: vector drawing; Base: databases;
* Math: mathematical formulas.

The software is based on the source code of version 5.2 of StarOffice, released by the acquirer, Sun Microsystems in June 2000. The resulting project, known as OpenOffice. Org is available under several licenses (LGPL and up to version 2.0beta2 not included, the SISSL), and runs on multiple platforms including Windows, many Unix: Linux, Solaris, or Apple Mac OS X.

As part of its policy of transparency, the storage format used by OOo is open and documented, it is standardized as universal office format, under the name of the OpenDocument OASIS standards body, then by the ISO. The export file in Portable Document Format (PDF) is available to produce documents for publication.

To attract as many users, the software is designed to be particularly compatible with Microsoft Office, the entire office the most widespread. This compatibility is sought at the level of file formats and user interface, trying to make it as similar as possible.
